King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending to the throne at just three years old, has died in Uganda at the age of 34.
The traditional ruler of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda died on Thursday, according to the kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who announced his death on Friday.
The cause of death has not been disclosed. However, Ugandan media reported that King Oyo had been critically ill and was receiving medical treatment in the United States.
King Oyo became ruler in 1995 following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Rukidi III. Because Oyo was only three years old, a regency was established to oversee the kingdom until he reached adulthood.
He was formally crowned at the age of 18 in 2010.
Guinness World Records recognised Oyo as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, a title he earned after inheriting the throne as a toddler.
During his 31-year reign, King Oyo became an important cultural figure in Uganda. He supported causes including youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness.
Although he was not officially married, the Tooro Kingdom said the royal succession would continue. According to the kingdom’s Prime Minister, King Oyo left behind a son who will serve as his heir. The prince’s identity will be officially announced at the appropriate time according to Tooro traditions and customs.
The Tooro Kingdom is one of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms. Although Uganda is governed by an elected president and its traditional kingdoms have no constitutional political authority, they continue to play an important cultural role.
King Oyo was the 13th monarch of Tooro, a kingdom founded in the early 19th century.
His death has prompted condolences from other traditional institutions in Uganda, including the Buganda Kingdom, the country’s largest and most influential traditional institution.
King Oyo’s unusual journey—from becoming a child king at three to serving as an influential traditional leader—made him one of Uganda’s most well-known royal figures.
