WAEC Releases 2026 WASSCE Results, 61.54% Meet University Admission Benchmark

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

According to WAEC, 1,200,514 candidates, representing 61.54% of those who sat the examination, obtained at least five credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics—the minimum requirement for admission into most Nigerian universities. This marks a 1.42% decline compared to the 2025 performance.

A total of 1,959,668 candidates registered for the examination from 24,207 schools across Nigeria, Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea, while 1,950,726 candidates eventually sat for the examination.

WAEC also disclosed that 1,687,378 candidates (86.50%) earned five credits or more, regardless of whether English Language and Mathematics were included.

Among those who met the university admission benchmark, 558,883 were male and 641,631 were female.

The Council said 94.05% of candidates have had their results fully processed and released, while the results of 116,031 candidates (5.95%) are still being processed.

WAEC withheld the results of 167,486 candidates (8.59%) over alleged examination malpractice, noting that the figure is lower than the 9.7% recorded in 2025. The Council blamed the continued use of mobile phones in examination halls and organized cheating in some schools, adding that officials involved in malpractice would face disciplinary action.

The examination body also highlighted several innovations introduced during the 2026 examination, including the Digital Examiner Marking System (DEMS), serialized question papers to curb malpractice, and a new online portal for generating result-checking e-PINs.

Candidates can check their results online, while digital certificates will be available within 48 hours of result confirmation. Printed certificates are expected to be ready within 90 days. Registration for the 2026 WASSCE for Private Candidates (Second Series) is also ongoing.
