Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodriguez, says the country will maintain ownership and sovereignty over its oil resources despite a major agreement with the United States.
Under the 25-year deal, the US will gain rights to develop around 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil. Rodriguez said the agreement would help Venezuela revive its struggling oil industry by bringing in foreign investment, technology and operational expertise.
The project includes the development of 17 strategic oil fields, with an initial production target of 1.5 million barrels per day. Eight additional greenfield oil blocks are also planned.
Rodriguez said Venezuela would receive $19 for every barrel of oil produced and sold to the United States, potentially generating more than $200 billion annually, depending on global oil prices.
She described the agreement as “historic,” insisting that Venezuela would retain ownership of its natural resources while working with foreign companies to rebuild its energy sector.
US President Donald Trump announced the agreement on Friday, saying Washington would take partial control of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves and that foreign companies, including US firms such as Chevron, would help restore the country’s damaged energy infrastructure.
Venezuelan officials are expected to sign further agreements with oil companies next week granting new exploration and production rights.
