US Carries Out First Strike on Iran in Weeks

The United States has carried out an airstrike on Lark Island in southern Iran, marking its first attack on Iranian territory since late July.

A US official said the strike targeted launchers prepared to fire rockets carrying mines toward the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the attack, saying several soldiers were killed or wounded. The IRGC described the US action as an attack by the “American-Zionist enemy” and vowed that Iran would retaliate.

The strikes could further escalate tensions between Washington and Tehran, particularly as the US has recently shifted greater attention toward sanctions and financial pressure on Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major flashpoint. The United States says it has been protecting oil shipments through the waterway, while Iran maintains that the strait remains closed. Reports of attacks on ships in the area have continued.

Iran has previously responded to US strikes by launching missiles and drones at military bases hosting American troops in neighbouring countries.

The latest attack raises fresh concerns that military confrontation between the two countries could intensify after weeks of relative restraint.
