Arab American voters in Michigan are increasingly backing Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, viewing his campaign as a defining moment for their community despite heavy opposition from pro-Israel lobbying groups.
El-Sayed, a physician and former Detroit public health official, has built his campaign around expanding healthcare, lowering living costs, and redirecting government spending from overseas conflicts to domestic priorities. He has also been a strong critic of Israel's military campaign in Gaza and has called for changes to US policy in the Middle East.
His main rival in the Democratic primary, Congresswoman Haley Stevens, has received significant financial support from pro-Israel political groups, including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), making the Michigan contest one of the most closely watched races of the 2026 election cycle.
At campaign events in Dearborn, home to one of the largest Arab American communities in the United States, many supporters said El-Sayed represents their desire for greater political representation and a shift in US foreign policy. Community leaders argued that government resources should focus more on improving healthcare, infrastructure, and affordable housing rather than funding foreign wars.
The race has also highlighted growing divisions within the Democratic Party over US policy toward Israel. El-Sayed has earned endorsements from progressive leaders, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while Stevens is backed by prominent Democratic figures such as Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The campaign has become increasingly heated, with both sides exchanging accusations over campaign tactics and political messaging. Supporters of El-Sayed have also condemned what they describe as anti-Arab and Islamophobic attacks during the election.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the November general election. Political analysts say the Michigan Senate race could play a key role in determining which party controls the US Senate after the 2026 midterm elections.
