Hungary to Shut Down Paks Nuclear Plant as Danube Water Levels Hit Record Low.

Hungary will temporarily shut down the Paks Nuclear Power Plant on Sunday after water levels in the Danube River dropped to historic lows, Prime Minister Peter Magyar has announced.

The Paks facility, which produces nearly half of Hungary's electricity, relies on water from the Danube River to cool its reactors. However, prolonged dry weather and a severe lack of rainfall have caused the river's water level to fall significantly, making normal operations difficult.

The unusually low water levels have also affected river transportation and tourism, creating additional challenges for communities and businesses that depend on the Danube.

Government officials are closely monitoring the situation as the country works to maintain a stable electricity supply during the temporary shutdown. Authorities have not yet announced when the nuclear plant is expected to resume operations, saying the decision will depend on improvements in the river's water level.

The Paks Nuclear Power Plant is Hungary's largest electricity-generating facility and plays a crucial role in the country's energy system.
