The United States has announced plans to impose what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as the “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran.
Bessent said the new measures, details of which are expected to be unveiled on Monday, are intended to increase economic pressure on Tehran and could reduce the need for large-scale military action.
The announcement came after President Donald Trump warned countries and companies helping Iran that they could face severe economic consequences.
Iran condemned the planned sanctions, describing them as “economic terrorism” and saying they would not weaken the country’s determination to protect its independence and sovereignty.
China, a major buyer of Iranian oil, also criticized the move, saying sanctions and pressure would not resolve the crisis and urging the parties to pursue diplomatic solutions.
The latest US measures come amid the continuing Iran conflict, which has disrupted oil supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and contributed to rising global energy prices.
