United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appealed for $1.1 billion in additional funding to fully finance efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
The entire response programme is estimated to cost $2.1 billion, but only 48 percent of the required funds have been secured. Guterres warned that without additional funding, essential operations could run out of money within weeks, just as efforts need to be expanded.
He said the international community must provide the remaining $1.1 billion, stressing that even more funding could be required in the future.
More than 5,600 confirmed Ebola cases and over 2,700 deaths have been recorded in DR Congo since the outbreak was declared on May 15.
The outbreak is being driven by the Bundibugyo species of the Ebola virus, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments. It has become the largest Ebola outbreak in the history of DR Congo.
Health authorities are also facing challenges from some communities that have refused testing or resisted health interventions, making it harder to monitor and control the spread of the virus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said efforts are ongoing to strengthen the response and reach communities where the virus is spreading.
Meanwhile, the European Union has announced that it will provide testing kits worth €2.5 million ($2.9 million) to support the response.
The previous deadliest Ebola outbreak in DR Congo, which occurred between 2018 and 2020, killed 2,299 people out of 3,381 confirmed cases, according to WHO figures.
