The United Kingdom has deployed a Rapid Deployment Team to Nepal to support British nationals and their families affected by devastating floods along the Nepal-China border.
Nepal was hit by severe flash floods on August 26, 2026, after a sudden surge of water entered the Bhote Koshi River in the mountainous Rasuwa district near the Nepal-China border.
The flooding caused extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other infrastructure, according to Nepalese authorities.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said its specially trained crisis-response personnel would arrive in Kathmandu on Saturday to strengthen consular operations and coordinate assistance with local authorities.
The team will assist British nationals arriving at or departing from the airport, help people seeking information about missing relatives, liaise with local authorities and emergency responders, and reinforce existing consular services.
UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the scale of the emergency prompted the deployment.
> “The scenes from Nepal are devastating, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected.”
Miliband added that the safety and welfare of British nationals remained the UK’s top priority and that the team would provide additional support to those affected by the disaster.
The UK is also providing a £5 million humanitarian package to support Nepal’s flood-response efforts. The FCDO said the assistance would be delivered through a combination of UN agencies, the Red Cross and non-governmental organisations.
The UK government also advised British nationals in Nepal who need consular assistance to contact the British Embassy in Kathmandu or the FCDO.
