The UK government has outlined six key benefits available to eligible asylum seekers who choose to stay with friends or relatives instead of Home Office accommodation while their asylum applications are being processed.
Under the guidance, asylum seekers may move to a suitable address provided by friends or family, provided there is enough space and the host agrees to accommodate them.
The arrangement does not affect the outcome of an asylum application. Eligible applicants can also continue receiving weekly financial support for food and other essential needs.
The six provisions include:
1. Accommodation with friends or family: Eligible asylum seekers can stay with relatives or friends who are willing and able to accommodate them.
2. Continued financial support: Those who qualify can continue receiving weekly payments to cover food and other essential items.
3. Living closer to loved ones: Moving in with people they know can provide asylum seekers with greater personal and emotional support.
4. Freedom to cook their own meals: Staying with friends or relatives gives applicants greater flexibility over their food and meal preparation.
5. Travel assistance: Eligible asylum seekers may receive help with the cost of travelling to their new address.
6. No impact on asylum applications: Moving from Home Office accommodation to an approved private address does not, in itself, affect the outcome of an asylum claim.
However, asylum seekers must follow the required procedure before moving.
They are expected to first confirm that their friend or relative is willing to accommodate them. They must then contact Migrant Help and provide the proposed address. The request is subsequently submitted to the Home Office for consideration.
Additional information may be requested from both the applicant and the prospective host.
Applicants must wait for confirmation before moving. Those who relocate without informing Migrant Help risk losing their financial support.
