Two Feared Dead as Flood Ravages Communities in Yobe State Capital

At least two people have died after torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding across several communities in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

The flood, which followed hours of heavy rain on Sunday, submerged parts of Malari, Pompomari and nearby communities, forcing emergency responders to launch search and rescue operations.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed that the victims were identified as Isa Haruna, a 38-year-old security guard, and Abba Kyari, an 18-year-old resident who drowned in the Pompomari area.

According to SEMA, its Search and Rescue Team, working alongside the Yobe State Fire Service, responded to emergency calls from affected communities. Upon reaching the scene, both victims were confirmed dead, and their bodies were evacuated to the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital mortuary in Damaturu.

The agency urged residents to remain vigilant as the rainy season continues, warning that floodwaters pose serious risks, especially to children who are currently on school holidays.

SEMA advised parents and guardians to keep children away from rivers, drainage channels and other flood-prone areas. It also cautioned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to cross flooded roads.

Residents were further encouraged to clear blocked drainage systems, monitor weather updates, relocate to safer locations whenever necessary, avoid contact with contaminated floodwater, and promptly report emergencies to relevant authorities.

Authorities have yet to provide an official assessment of the damage caused to homes, infrastructure and other properties in the affected communities.
