Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are set to establish new political and military mechanisms, conduct joint military exercises and expand cooperation in the defence industry following a landmark defence agreement signed last week.
The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed on August 7, provides that an armed attack against any of the three countries would be treated as an attack against all three, in a commitment similar to NATO’s collective-defence principle.
Turkey’s Defence Ministry said the agreement is designed to place defence and military relations among the three countries on a more institutional and sustainable footing.
Under the pact, the countries plan to establish strategic mechanisms involving their defence and foreign ministers as well as military chiefs. The three governments will also strengthen high-level coordination on security matters.
Joint exercises involving land, naval and air forces are planned, alongside cooperation in air defence and unmanned systems.
The countries also intend to expand defence-industry cooperation, including joint development and production, technology sharing, maintenance and logistics. Artificial intelligence, electronic warfare and unmanned and autonomous systems will be among the priority areas.
Turkey said the agreement could be expanded to include other countries, with Egypt mentioned as a possible future participant. Ankara also stressed that the pact is not intended to replace existing alliances.
Meanwhile, Turkey is participating in talks in Jeddah aimed at forming an international coalition to protect shipping routes in the Red Sea.
The agreement comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing security concerns across the Middle East.
