US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington is shifting its focus from new military strikes to economic pressure as it seeks to push Iran towards a deal.
Speaking in an interview with Axios on Sunday, Trump said the United States was taking a more cautious approach after months of conflict, describing Washington’s current engagement with Tehran as “only semi-negotiating.”
Trump said Iran’s economy was under severe strain, pointing to high inflation and difficulties in meeting the financial demands of its military. He also credited the US naval blockade, which has been in place since April, with increasing pressure on Tehran.
“We are low-keying it,” Trump said, suggesting that Washington was deliberately reducing the intensity of its military approach while maintaining economic pressure.
The US president also said declining oil prices, currently slightly above $75 per barrel, had helped reduce the impact of the conflict on American consumers.
Meanwhile, Oman-mediated talks between the United States and Iran over the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz appear to be nearing a possible breakthrough.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said the negotiations have entered their final stages, with both sides reportedly working towards an agreement on the coordinates of a new shipping route through the strait.
However, Tehran has made clear that it will not fully reopen the waterway unless Washington changes its policies. Iran is demanding the lifting of the naval blockade, an end to military operations and compensation for war-related damages.
A ceasefire reached in June collapsed weeks later amid disagreements over control of the Strait of Hormuz, leading to renewed fighting.
Iran has since carried out intermittent attacks on US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, while Yemen’s Houthi movement, which is aligned with Tehran, announced a separate naval blockade against Saudi Arabia last month.
The developments come amid reports of growing differences between Washington and Israel over the pace of US efforts to reduce fighting on several fronts, including Gaza and Lebanon.
Trump, meanwhile, said the situation would ultimately be resolved, comparing the strategy to a game of chess.
