US President Donald Trump has posted a map on his Truth Social platform showing the strategic Strait of Hormuz labelled as “NEW U.S. TERRITORY,” escalating his threats over the vital waterway amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, with a significant share of global oil supplies passing through it. Its disruption has raised concerns about energy prices and the wider global economy.
Trump had earlier suggested that the United States could take control of the strait, an idea Iran has strongly rejected. Iranian authorities have insisted that the waterway will remain under Iranian control.
The development comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to rise following the outbreak of war involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Iran has reportedly linked the reopening of the strait to several demands, including an end to the US blockade of Iranian ports, the lifting of oil sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets and compensation for war-related damages.
Trump has previously made controversial territorial proposals since returning to office, including suggestions involving Canada, Greenland and the Gaza Strip.
The latest claim over the Strait of Hormuz is likely to further heighten tensions in a region already facing severe geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
