Wike: ‘Tinubu Could Have Won Osun Election If APC Wanted Victory At All Costs’

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he would have travelled to Osun State to help the All Progressives Congress (APC) win the governorship election if President Bola Tinubu had been determined to secure victory “at all costs.”

Wike made the statement on Tuesday while speaking to journalists during an inspection of flood-prone areas in Maitama, Abuja.

The minister was reacting to the outcome of the Osun governorship election, which was won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Governor Ademola Adeleke.

According to Wike, the APC could have emerged victorious if President Tinubu had made winning the election a priority.

He said, “If the President had wanted to win the Osun State election at all costs, I would have been there and we would have won it, and there’s nothing the governor can do.”

The comment followed the APC’s defeat in the election, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring Adeleke the winner.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, remains a member of the PDP despite his appointment as FCT minister by President Tinubu. He has continued to publicly support the Tinubu administration and some of its policies.

The minister was also a prominent member of the PDP’s G5 governors, who opposed the party’s presidential candidate during the 2023 general election.

Since joining the federal cabinet, Wike has maintained that his support for President Tinubu does not mean he has abandoned the PDP.

His latest remarks suggest that he believes the APC had the political capacity to defeat Adeleke in Osun State if the party and the President had committed greater political resources to the election.
