Trump Denies Iran Talks as Tehran Claims US Seeks Negotiations

US President Donald Trump has denied that Washington is holding or planning talks with Iran, despite Tehran claiming that the United States is seeking negotiations on Iranian terms.

Trump said the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains in force and maintained that mines in the strategic waterway have been cleared.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, said Washington was now “begging” to negotiate after failing to force Tehran to surrender.

Meanwhile, tensions across the region continue to affect energy supplies and shipping. Oil prices rose for a fourth consecutive session, with Brent crude reaching $91.28 a barrel and US West Texas Intermediate trading at $85.31.

Iraq has also approved measures to diversify its crude export routes as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupts regional energy flows.

Elsewhere, South Korea said President Trump’s decision to scale back joint military drills appeared intended to pressure Seoul to become involved in the Iran conflict. The annual US-South Korea military exercises will now end six days earlier than planned.

The United Nations has meanwhile condemned Israeli air strikes on Syria, while fighting and tensions continue in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
