US President Donald Trump has declared that Iran is a “failed nation” and threatened to launch a strong response after Iran carried out a missile attack on a military base hosting US troops in Jordan.
Trump made the remarks on Monday as fighting between the United States and Iran resumed following weeks of relative calm.
In a social media post, Trump claimed that Iran had lost much of its military and economic strength, saying the country had “no Navy,” “no Air Force” and “no currency.” He also alleged that inflation had reached 300 percent and that Iran’s leadership was in disarray.
“Iran is officially a Failed Nation. IT IS DEAD!” Trump wrote.
The latest escalation followed a US military strike on Iran’s Larak Island on Sunday. Washington said the attack targeted launchers believed to be preparing rockets capable of carrying naval mines into the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Iran responded by firing missiles at a military base in Jordan that hosts US forces.
Trump subsequently warned that the United States would retaliate.
“We’re going to hit them hard,” he told Fox News, adding that “there will be a response.”
The renewed fighting marks the first direct military confrontation between the two countries since July and comes as the US-Israel war on Iran enters its seventh month.
Trump Accuses Iran of Killing Protesters
Trump also accused Iranian authorities of violently suppressing anti-government demonstrations and called for Iran’s leaders to face prosecution for what he described as “war crimes against humanity.”
He claimed that more than 100,000 protesters had been killed, although he did not provide evidence explaining how the figure was reached.
Iranian authorities have previously reported a much lower death toll of 3,117 people, including members of the security forces, while blaming the unrest on what they described as Israel-backed rioters.
The conflicting figures could not be independently verified.
Trump has repeatedly predicted that Iran’s governing system is close to collapse. However, Iran’s government remains in place, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps continuing to play a central role in the country’s military response.
The latest exchange of attacks has raised fears that the conflict could escalate further, particularly as diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting end to the war remain unresolved.
Iran has also accused the United States of committing war crimes and attacking civilians. One of the most serious incidents occurred in Minab in southern Iran, where a US strike on a girls’ school reportedly killed 168 people, most of them children.
