Troops Rescue Woman Held by Boko Haram for Five Years in Borno

Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai have rescued a 20-year-old woman who was held captive by Boko Haram insurgents for five years after escaping from a terrorist camp in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

The woman, identified as Ummi Umar, was reportedly abducted during the 2021 farming season. She was found by troops on a routine patrol near Amuda Bridge on July 29 after fleeing from the abandoned Suyaka terrorist camp in Gava 1.

According to security sources, Umar told soldiers that she had remained in captivity since her abduction until the insurgents deserted the camp, creating an opportunity for her to escape.

The troops provided her with immediate medical attention before handing her over to community leaders in Ngoshe for care and reunification with her family.

Security officials said the rescue increases the number of abductees recovered through the Gwoza East corridor to 117 since the March 3, 2026 terrorist attack in the area.

Military authorities said the operation reflects ongoing successes against Boko Haram and ISWAP in the North-East, while stressing that troops remain on high alert and continue offensive operations to eliminate the remaining terrorist strongholds.
