Bridges are more than structures made of concrete and steel. Across Africa, they connect cities, facilitate trade and provide vital transportation routes for millions of people every day.
According to the report, the five longest bridges in Africa in 2026 are:
1. 6th October Bridge – Egypt: Approximately 20.5 kilometres long and located in Cairo. It crosses the Nile River twice and passes through the heart of the city. Built over several decades, it serves millions of commuters daily.
2. Third Mainland Bridge – Nigeria: Approximately 11.8 kilometres long, the bridge connects Lagos Island with the mainland across Lagos Lagoon. Since opening in 1990, it has remained a major transportation route in Lagos and is regarded as the longest bridge in West Africa.
3. Suez Canal Bridge – Egypt: Approximately 3.9 kilometres long. Also known as the Mubarak Peace Bridge, it crosses the Suez Canal and connects mainland Egypt with the Sinai Peninsula, providing an important link between Africa and Asia.
4. Mozambique Island Bridge – Mozambique: Approximately 3.8 kilometres long. The bridge connects the mainland with the historic Island of Mozambique, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has improved transportation and contributed to tourism in the area.
5. Dona Ana Bridge – Mozambique: Approximately 3.7 kilometres long. It crosses the Zambezi River and was originally constructed for railway use. It now serves as an important crossing for people and the movement of goods.
From Cairo to Lagos and Mozambique, these major bridges demonstrate how engineering infrastructure is helping to connect African communities, strengthen transportation networks and support economic activity across the continent.
