President Bola Tinubu has directed the rollout of 500 additional Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling stations across Nigeria, bringing the government’s planned network to 1,000 stations nationwide.
The move is aimed at reducing transportation costs following the removal of the petrol subsidy. Tinubu said the Federal Government and state governments had agreed to take immediate steps to lower transport fares, particularly for intra-state journeys.
The President said the government’s target is for Nigerians to begin benefiting from lower transport costs from October 1, as cheaper alternative fuels reduce vehicle operating expenses.
More than 120,000 vehicles have already been converted to CNG, while over 100,000 additional conversion kits are being processed. The government is also expanding conversion centres and CNG infrastructure.
According to Tinubu, CNG-powered vehicles can spend 60–80 per cent less on fuel than petrol-powered vehicles, with the expected savings eventually reflected in lower fares.
The government is also promoting electric vehicles as part of its broader strategy to reduce transportation costs nationwide.
