Three UK Airports Suffer Cyberattack as 8.7m Customers’ Data Is Accessed

Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports have been hit by a cyberattack in which hackers accessed the personal information of approximately 8.7 million customers.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which operates the three airports, said the stolen information was linked to car park, lounge and fast-track bookings, as well as airport Wi-Fi registrations.

The compromised data reportedly included customers’ email addresses, telephone numbers, vehicle registration numbers and postcodes.

However, MAG said passengers’ safety and aviation security were not affected. Airport operations also continued normally, while the affected system did not contain customers’ bank or payment details.

The company has advised affected customers to remain vigilant for suspicious emails, phone calls and text messages pretending to come from the airports. Customers were warned not to provide banking or payment information in response to unexpected requests.

The cyberattack occurred during the peak summer travel period, when millions of passengers are using airports across the UK.

MAG said it had immediately taken steps to contain the incident and was working with cybersecurity specialists and relevant authorities to protect customer information and its systems.

The group apologised to customers for the concern caused by the breach and stressed that the security of personal information remains a priority.

Cybersecurity experts have warned that airports hold large amounts of passenger data because of services such as parking, airport lounges, fast-track access and Wi-Fi registration, making them attractive targets for cybercriminals.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure and major British companies.
