The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, has arrested a 46-year-old man for allegedly vandalising the perimeter fence of the Great Green Wall Project at the Gabasmari Forest Reserve in Birniwa Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Abdullahi Muhammad from Kasaaga Village in Guri Local Government Area, was arrested on Saturday following intelligence reports and the collaborative efforts of local residents and forestry officials.
According to the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly damaged about 10 metres of the protective fencing surrounding the forest reserve.
He explained that the fence was constructed about seven years ago under the Great Green Wall Project, an environmental initiative designed to combat desertification and protect forest ecosystems. The reserve is managed by the Forestry Department of the Jigawa State Ministry of Environment.
Reacting to the arrest, the State Commandant, CC Muhammad Ingawa, condemned the increasing cases of vandalism targeting public infrastructure, describing such acts as attacks on government investments and environmental protection efforts.
He commended NSCDC personnel, community members and forestry officials for their vigilance and cooperation, stressing that community participation remains vital in safeguarding public assets.
The command also reaffirmed its commitment to identifying, arresting and prosecuting individuals involved in vandalising critical national assets and infrastructure.
The suspect remains in NSCDC custody while investigations continue to determine whether others were involved. He is expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
