Freedolyn Ani, the best graduating student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and a joint best graduating student at the Nigerian Law School, has revealed that her decision to study law was largely inspired by her late father's dream.
Speaking about her academic journey, Ani said she grew up in Akure, Ondo State, in a modest family where her father instilled discipline, contentment and the importance of striving for excellence. Although she initially wanted to pursue the arts, her father agreed only on the condition that she studied law.
She explained that beyond fulfilling her father's wish, she developed a passion for law after realising its role in promoting justice, order and social reform. Determined to excel, Ani set a goal of graduating with a first-class degree before she even gained admission into OAU.
Ani said consistency was the key to her success. She maintained a daily reading routine throughout her university years, attended lectures regularly and focused on understanding her personal study habits rather than following others.
Despite facing financial challenges and moments of self-doubt, she remained committed to her goal. She recalled that after improving her academic performance in her first year, she became convinced she could finish with a first-class degree and worked tirelessly to maintain the standard.
The young lawyer described graduating with a first class from OAU as a proud moment, especially because it fulfilled her father's dream. However, tragedy struck shortly after her graduation when her father passed away, preventing him from witnessing her convocation or her success at the Nigerian Law School.
Ani admitted that coping with grief while attending the Nigerian Law School was one of the toughest periods of her life. She said the demanding academic environment, combined with the emotional pain of losing her father, tested her resilience.
She credited her mother for encouraging her to continue and said her determination to honour her father's memory motivated her to persevere.
Her hard work eventually paid off as she graduated with another first-class result and emerged as a joint best graduating student at the Nigerian Law School.
Reflecting on her journey, Ani urged students to remain dedicated to their goals despite life's difficulties. She said every challenge presents an opportunity for growth and encouraged young people to always give their best in whatever they do.
