Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has appointed Mazloum Abdi, the former commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), as an adviser to the presidency.
The appointment was announced on Thursday through Presidential Decree No. 164, according to Syria’s state news agency Sana.
The move comes just three days after Abdi announced the dissolution of the SDF and the completion of its integration into Syria’s military. Abdi is the most senior Kurdish figure to receive a position in the Syrian government.
The new advisory role is a lower-ranking position than one previously proposed in January, when al-Sharaa offered Abdi the position of deputy defence minister and suggested appointing him governor of Hasakah province.
Al-Sharaa and Abdi first agreed in March 2025 to integrate the SDF into the central Syrian government. However, the agreement made little progress before its deadline, leading to fighting between government forces and the SDF in northeastern Syria in January.
A subsequent ceasefire brought the cities of Raqqa, Deir Az Zor and Hasakah under central government control and required the SDF to integrate into Syria’s defence and interior ministries under a 14-point agreement.
The SDF’s women’s units, known as the YPJ, have yet to be fully integrated into the Syrian army after being told that the military structure does not currently include units for women.
In addition to the military agreement, al-Sharaa issued a decree in January recognising Kurdish as a national language and restoring citizenship to Syrian Kurds.
The dissolution of the SDF gives Damascus formal authority over almost all Syrian territory, marking a major step in al-Sharaa’s efforts to reunify the country following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
