The Presidency has announced that the proposed State Police Executive Bill will be presented to President Bola Tinubu for review on September 3, 2026, as part of a seven-week plan to establish the legal framework for state policing in Nigeria.
Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this after the committee's inaugural meeting at the State House in Abuja on Monday.
According to Gbajabiamila, the committee began technical and administrative work on the bill following its inauguration by President Bola Tinubu in July 2026. The entire drafting process is scheduled to run from July 27 to September 14, 2026.
He explained that once the President reviews and approves the executive bill, it will undergo nationwide public consultations before being revised and forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
Gbajabiamila stressed that although the timeline is ambitious, the process is designed to ensure comprehensive technical input and public participation rather than rushing the legislation.
On the issue of funding state police, he said it is too early to estimate the financial cost, noting that any projection must be based on detailed research and the unique security and infrastructure needs of each state.
He also announced that Nigerians will be invited to contribute to the draft legislation by submitting memoranda through a dedicated public portal. The submission window is expected to remain open for about ten days, with the possibility of an extension if necessary.
The proposed State Police framework is expected to address key issues such as recruitment, command structure, infrastructure, funding, and the diverse security needs of Nigeria's states before the final executive bill is transmitted to the National Assembly.
