A South Korean court has sentenced Unification Church leader Hak Ja Han to two years in prison after finding her guilty of corruption-related charges.
The Seoul Central District Court handed down the sentence on Monday, according to the court’s public affairs office. Han, the widow of the church’s founder, Sun Myung Moon, was arrested last year over allegations involving bribery, embezzlement and destruction of evidence.
Prosecutors accused Han of directing church officials to bribe Kim Keon Hee, the wife of former conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol, as well as a prominent politician close to Yoon. The alleged payments were reportedly intended to secure political favors.
Han was also accused of misappropriating church funds and ordering the destruction of evidence linked to her gambling activities in the United States.
The case is connected to a broader corruption investigation involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee. In January, Kim was sentenced to 20 months in prison for accepting gifts from the Unification Church, including a Graff diamond necklace and a Chanel handbag.
An appeals court later increased Kim’s sentence to four years after convicting her on additional charges, including receiving another Chanel bag from the church and manipulating stock prices.
The legal troubles have further deepened the political fallout surrounding Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife. Yoon was impeached and eventually removed from office following his controversial declaration of martial law in late 2024.
The Unification Church, founded by Sun Myung Moon, has long attracted international attention because of its religious activities and political connections.
