An alleged Nigerian drug trafficker has been arrested in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, after police reportedly found 57.18 grammes of cocaine valued at more than 2.9 million Indian rupees, equivalent to about N40.9 million.
The woman, identified as Emmanuel Joy, a Lagos resident, was arrested by officers of the Chandan Nagar Police near IT Park in Sinhasa, according to a report by News18 Hindi.
Police said Joy was travelling from Mumbai to Indore, allegedly to supply cocaine. Her arrest reportedly occurred during increased security checks ahead of the Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami celebrations.
According to the report, officers on patrol noticed Joy carrying a black bag and became suspicious. She was stopped and questioned, but police said her responses were unsatisfactory. A search conducted in the presence of female officers allegedly led to the discovery of 57.18 grammes of cocaine concealed in a transparent bag.
Investigators reportedly said the seized cocaine was worth more than 2.9 million rupees.
News18 Hindi reported that Joy arrived in India from Nigeria on August 14 with a seven-month business visa. She was reportedly staying in Bandra East, Mumbai, where she worked at a hair salon with her sister.
During questioning, Joy allegedly told investigators that she bought the cocaine at a low price and planned to sell it at a higher price in Indore. Police, however, are said to be independently verifying her account.
A case has been filed against her under Sections 8 and 21 of India's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Police have also examined her passport, visa and immigration records. Following her arrest, Joy was taken before a court and remanded in custody while investigations continue.
Investigators are now examining her mobile phone and other digital evidence to identify possible members of the alleged drug network.
Police are particularly investigating who supplied the cocaine, who it was allegedly intended for in Indore, and whether other individuals were involved.
The investigation is expected to shed more light on the alleged cocaine supply chain between Mumbai and Indore and determine whether additional suspects will be arrested.
