A six-year-old Palestinian-British girl, Saja El-Khawas, has died in hospital days after her parents and teenage sister drowned off the coast of Sussex in the United Kingdom.
Saja was taken to hospital in critical condition on Tuesday after getting into difficulty in the water at Shoreham. Sussex Police confirmed that she later died.
Her father, Hassan El-Khawas, 55, mother, Zeina Alayn, 37, and 14-year-old sister, Sara El-Khawas, all died at the scene.
The family, who lived in London, had travelled to Shoreham for a beach visit as the UK experienced another heatwave.
Police said an investigation remains ongoing, but the current theory is that the incident was a tragic accident with no third-party involvement.
According to reports, the family originally came from the Rashidieh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon. Hassan reportedly arrived in Britain as a refugee.
The tragedy has prompted tributes from Palestinian communities in Britain. The Palestinian Forum in Britain held a gathering on Thursday to commemorate the family.
The deaths occurred amid a rise in drownings across parts of Europe as people sought relief from intense summer heat. Similar incidents have been reported in the UK, France and Germany.
