Six-Year-Old Boy Dies After Teacher Allegedly Slaps Him in Indian School.

Authorities in Andhra Pradesh, India, have launched an investigation into the death of a six-year-old boy who reportedly collapsed after being slapped by a teacher at a school in Visakhapatnam.

Security-camera footage reportedly shows a female teacher holding the child by his clothes and slapping him across the face before he collapsed. The video was later circulated widely by local media, sparking public outrage over corporal punishment in schools.

The child, identified by local media as Pranay Tej, was reportedly healthy when he left home for school that morning. His father said the boy had insisted on going to school.

Andhra Pradesh Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh said legal action would be taken against those responsible, including the school management. He also ordered a full investigation and stressed that corporal punishment has no place in schools.

Police said they registered a case following a complaint from the boy’s father. Investigators have completed the post-mortem and handed the body over to the family, but authorities said the exact cause of death would be determined after all relevant medical reports are received.

The incident has renewed concerns about violence against children in Indian schools. A 2018 study by the Indian NGO Agrasar found that about 80 percent of children from low-income families experienced corporal punishment from teachers, despite the practice being officially prohibited in India.

Authorities have formed a committee to investigate the incident, with officials promising strict action against anyone found responsible.
