At least six people were killed and four others injured after a landslide struck Mumbai, India’s financial capital, early Wednesday, officials said.
The incident occurred in Chirag Nagar, in Maharashtra state. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the landslide caused debris to fall onto two to three nearby rooms, trapping several people.
Officials initially reported that between six and eight people could be trapped beneath the debris as rescue teams worked to locate and evacuate them.
Senior police official Ganesh Shinde said heavy rainfall triggered the landslide. Multiple rescue teams were deployed to the area as emergency operations continued.
India experiences heavy monsoon rainfall between June and September each year, often causing flooding, landslides and significant damage to homes and infrastructure.
