Saudi Crown Prince Urges Trump to Choose Diplomacy Over Escalation With Iran

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has called on United States President Donald Trump to prioritize diplomatic dialogue and de-escalation amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the crown prince spoke with Trump by telephone, stressing the importance of reducing tensions through dialogue and supporting peaceful diplomatic efforts. He also emphasized the need to safeguard security and stability across the Gulf region and prevent a wider conflict that could threaten both regional and global peace.

The conversation came shortly before President Trump announced he was suspending planned military strikes against Iran, saying there was a framework for a possible agreement to end months of hostilities. A day earlier, Trump had warned of overwhelming military action against Iran if tensions continued to escalate.

Trump later said the proposed agreement would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing concerns over Iran's nuclear programme. However, Iranian officials rejected claims that Tehran had requested a pause in hostilities, describing the statement as inaccurate and insisting that their armed forces remain on high alert.

Regional observers say Saudi Arabia's diplomatic engagement reflects growing concern that any large-scale military confrontation could threaten Gulf energy infrastructure and disrupt global oil supplies. The kingdom has faced security challenges in recent weeks, including drone attacks targeting its oil facilities.

Analysts believe mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia, alongside Qatar, Oman and Pakistan, may have contributed to Washington's decision to delay further military action. Diplomats involved in the process remain cautiously optimistic that negotiations between the United States and Iran could resume in the coming days.

The conflict, which intensified earlier this year, has continued to raise fears of broader instability across the Middle East, making renewed diplomatic efforts increasingly important.
