Russian Paramilitaries Accused of Killing Nine Civilians in Mali

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Russian-linked Africa Corps fighters in Mali of killing nine civilians, including four children, during an alleged operation in the central Mopti region.

According to HRW, more than 100 Africa Corps fighters reportedly rounded up at least 80 men and boys in Bombori village on July 10. Witnesses told the organisation that the detainees were beaten and questioned about alleged links to armed groups while Malian soldiers were present.

HRW said six civilians were shot dead while attempting to escape, while three others were allegedly detained and executed. One of the detainees was reportedly beheaded.

The rights group also alleged that dozens of people were beaten and at least eight homes were burned during the operation.

HRW called on Malian authorities to conduct an independent and impartial investigation and hold all those responsible accountable, including members of the Malian military.

The allegations come as Mali continues to battle armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS), alongside separatist forces. The country's military government has increasingly turned to Russia for security support after relations with Western countries, particularly France, deteriorated.

Russia's Africa Corps has become a major military partner for Mali following the withdrawal of the Wagner Group from the country. Moscow's growing role has been linked to security cooperation and access to Mali's mineral resources, particularly gold.

HRW's allegations have not been independently verified.
