At least 14 people have been killed after Russia and Ukraine exchanged fresh long-range drone and missile attacks, marking another escalation in the more than four-year conflict.
Russian officials said Ukrainian drones struck several regions overnight, killing at least nine people despite claims that air defense systems intercepted hundreds of drones. Among the victims were civilians in the Udmurtia, Saratov, Engels, and Belgorod regions. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were also damaged.
Ukraine's military said it targeted strategic Russian facilities, including the Saratov oil refinery, the Engels airbase, and an oil depot in the Kaluga region. Fires were reported at several of the targeted sites.
Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukraine killed at least five people. Air strikes and guided bombs hit residential areas in Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kherson, causing casualties and damage to civilian property.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that the country is facing a critical shortage of Patriot air defense interceptor missiles, limiting its ability to stop Russian ballistic missile attacks. He urged international partners to provide additional air defense support.
The latest exchange highlights the growing use of long-range drones and missiles by both countries, with attacks increasingly reaching far beyond the front lines and affecting civilian populations and key infrastructure.
