At least 16 people have been killed and 130 others injured, including at least 23 children, after a Russian drone strike hit a shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, authorities said.
The attack occurred on Friday while the shopping centre was crowded with civilians. Rescue teams continued searching through the rubble on Saturday, raising concerns that the death toll could increase.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as a deliberate “double-tap” strike, alleging that a second drone targeted the site after emergency responders had begun arriving. He condemned the attack as “absolutely cynical and vile” and vowed that Ukraine would respond.
Kryvyi Rih is Zelenskyy’s hometown. Ukrainian officials said the strikes involved powerful Shahed-type drones.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Kyiv of opening a “Pandora’s box” by targeting Russian economic infrastructure. He warned that Moscow would retaliate against what he called Ukraine’s “most sensitive economic sectors.”
Ukraine has intensified drone attacks against Russian economic facilities, including oil refineries and warehouses, while Russia has increasingly targeted Ukrainian economic infrastructure and grain-export facilities.
Civilian casualties in Ukraine have risen sharply as Russia has expanded its aerial campaign. Ukrainian forces are also facing challenges defending against ballistic missiles and newer jet-powered drones that are more difficult to intercept.
