Russia has accused Ukraine of carrying out the deadly bombing at the Balzi Rossi restaurant in Moscow that left five people dead and 19 others injured over the weekend.
In a statement on Monday, the Russian Embassy in Rome claimed the attack was aimed at intimidating Italians living and working in Russia. According to the embassy, the bombing targeted the Italian community, although the restaurant's Italian chef and staff escaped unharmed after a security guard intervened.
Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the accusation.
Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee had earlier reported that three people were killed in the blast, including the woman believed to have carried the explosive device, a security guard who confronted her, and a restaurant guest. However, Russian officials later revised the death toll to five, with 19 people confirmed injured.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the explosion as a "brutal terrorist act" but stopped short of identifying those responsible.
The Balzi Rossi restaurant is located in one of Moscow's historic Stalin-era skyscrapers. Russian authorities are continuing investigations into the bombing and have not publicly identified the suspected masterminds behind the attack.
