Progressive Democrat Aisha Wahab has won the special election in California’s East Bay to fill the US congressional seat previously held by Eric Swalwell.
Wahab, a state senator, defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez in the race for the remaining months of Swalwell’s term. She had the backing of the state Democratic Party, labor unions, local officials and progressive groups.
The election followed Swalwell’s resignation in April after he faced allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied.
Wahab maintained a strong lead during much of the campaign, but the race became unexpectedly competitive after political action committees linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent millions of dollars supporting Hernandez and attacking Wahab.
With 95 percent of votes counted, Wahab was ahead by slightly more than six percentage points.
Wahab, who was the first Muslim woman and Afghan American elected to California’s legislature, said her victory represented the possibilities of the American Dream.
Hernandez congratulated the voters and said she was proud of her performance despite the defeat.
Wahab will now represent the district in Congress for the remainder of Swalwell’s term.
