The Kwara State Police Command has rejected reports claiming that 176 residents were abducted during a terrorist attack on Woro and neighboring Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area.
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, the Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, said the figure did not come from any official security agency and could not be verified.
According to him, although several residents were kidnapped during the February 3, 2026 attack, there is no confirmed record showing that 176 people were taken.
"The claim that 176 people were abducted did not originate from any security agency. The figure appears to have emerged after a video circulated in which abducted victims claimed they were more than 100," Adekimi said.
He added that residents who viewed the video could identify only about 10 of the victims, including the wife of a traditional ruler, making it impossible to confirm the widely circulated figure.
The police commissioner stressed that security agencies would not rely on information spread by the terrorists and reaffirmed that ongoing operations remain focused on rescuing everyone still being held captive.
Adekimi also disclosed that security operations have intensified around the Borgu axis following intelligence reports that members of Lakurawa, Ansaru, and Boko Haram have established bases in the area. He noted that these groups are not based in Kwara State, and several suspects have already been arrested during ongoing operations.
The clarification comes after community leaders and families of the victims appealed to the Federal Government to intensify rescue efforts, alleging that about 176 people have remained in captivity for nearly six months. They also claimed that over ₦155 million was raised for negotiations with the kidnappers, but the terrorists rejected the offer and allegedly threatened to kill some hostages while forcing some female captives into marriage.
The attack on Woro community occurred on February 3, 2026, when heavily armed terrorists stormed the area, killing several residents, burning homes and shops, and abducting many others before security forces responded.
