Police Arrest Nine Over Deadly Violence in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested nine suspects in connection with separate incidents of murder, attacks on security personnel, and violent unrest at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson SP Shi’isu Adam said the arrests followed investigations into the July 26 violence, which reportedly began after an altercation between a soldier and a 25-year-old man, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim, at the market. The victim was allegedly stabbed during the dispute and later died from his injuries.

According to the police, the incident sparked widespread violence as suspected hoodlums attacked a police station, fired bows and arrows at security operatives, and set two market shops on fire. Intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of two suspects, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved.

In a related development, six additional suspects were arrested for allegedly attacking two vigilante members during the unrest. One of the vigilantes died from injuries sustained in the attack, while the second is receiving medical treatment. Police also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the crisis.

In a separate incident, officers arrested a 20-year-old suspect over the fatal stabbing of another young man in Dabigel Village, Ringim Local Government Area. Police said the victim was rushed to hospital but was confirmed dead while receiving treatment. The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue before prosecution.

The command also announced that it has begun a stakeholders' engagement involving community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, youth representatives, and members of Miyetti Allah to address the root causes of the Gujungu Market violence and prevent future occurrences.

The Commissioner of Police commended the professionalism of security personnel in containing the disturbances and reassured residents of the command's commitment to protecting lives and property. He urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and continue providing credible information to support ongoing investigations.
