More than 60,000 supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State have defected to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), citing dissatisfaction with the PDP-led administration in the state.
The defectors, operating under the Hon. Umar Farouk Adam Support Group, announced their decision at an event held at the MHWUN Complex in Bauchi over the weekend.
The group also declared their support for Senator Shehu Buba Umar, the PRP governorship candidate in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the gathering, the group’s leader, Hon. Umar Farouk, said the decision to leave the PDP was driven by what he described as unfulfilled campaign promises, inadequate empowerment programmes and the neglect of youths and communities.
He said the group had chosen to join the PRP because it believed the party would provide better representation and create more opportunities for residents of the state.
According to him, Senator Shehu Buba had demonstrated commitment to grassroots development through interventions and regular engagement with communities.
Shehu Buba, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism, was represented at the event by his deputy, Hon. Tijjani Aliyu Madangala, the Majority Leader of the Bauchi State House of Assembly.
Madangala welcomed the defectors and described their movement to the PRP as a major boost for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said the development was an indication that many residents were seeking a change in the political leadership of Bauchi State.
He assured the new members that they would receive equal treatment within the PRP and urged them to work with other party members towards the success of the party in the 2027 presidential and governorship elections.
Political leaders at the event also advised youths in the state to focus on acquiring education and vocational skills, as well as establishing businesses, rather than relying solely on partisan politics for their livelihoods.
The mass defection could lead to further political realignments in Bauchi State as political parties intensify their mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.
The event ended with the formal declaration of the defectors and their reception into the Peoples Redemption Party.
