NLC Mourns as General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja Dies

The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Emmanuel Ugboaja, has died.

According to Vanguard, the development was announced in a letter from Ugboaja’s family to members of the NLC National Executive Council (NEC). The letter was subsequently made public by NLC President, Joe Ajaero.

Ugboaja was the fifth General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress. He was a veteran trade unionist and lawyer who was appointed to the position in August 2019.

Born on May 15, 1966, Ugboaja obtained a law degree from the University of Calabar in 1987.

According to the NLC’s historical biography, he was the first Nigerian lawyer to work full-time for a trade union.

His death marks the loss of a prominent figure in Nigeria’s labour movement.
