Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA under the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division have engaged more than 200 suspected bandits in a fierce confrontation along the Kebbi-Zamfara border.
The suspected bandits, reportedly travelling in large numbers on motorcycles, were allegedly moving towards communities in Kebbi State when the troops intercepted them.
The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Olayinka Osoba, confirmed the development on Monday, saying the military operation was still ongoing.
According to Osoba, the Army was withholding operational details to avoid compromising the ongoing engagement.
«“It is an ongoing operation. We cannot give details because it will compromise the operation. However, we will give details after the intense fighting going on right now,” he said.»
He added that ground troops were receiving support from the Nigerian Air Force as security forces intensified efforts to prevent the suspected bandits from entering Kebbi communities.
Osoba said the armed men had assembled in large numbers and were attempting to gain access to villages, allegedly with the intention of attacking residents.
“The ground troops, supported by the air component, are currently engaging the bandits who are trying to gain access into Kebbi villages,” he said.
Communities reportedly considered vulnerable include Gadar Zaima in the northern part of Zuru Emirate, while Onashi and Mai Rairai in the southern axis have also faced security threats linked to violence spilling over from Zamfara State.
The latest confrontation comes amid sustained military operations along the Kebbi-Zamfara corridor, as security forces seek to prevent armed groups operating in Zamfara from expanding their activities into Kebbi communities.
The Army is expected to provide further details on the operation after the ongoing fighting has subsided.
