Nigeria Seeks Stronger Maritime Security Partnership With Bangladesh

Nigeria and Bangladesh are set to deepen cooperation in maritime defence and security, with both countries exploring opportunities in professional training, technology exchange, naval shipbuilding and defence-industrial development.

The commitment was reaffirmed by Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mainul Kabir, during a high-level meeting with Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Kabir stressed the need to transform the existing bilateral relationship into practical cooperation that would benefit both countries, particularly in maritime security and defence.

Abbas welcomed the Bangladeshi delegation and highlighted Nigeria’s experience in combating piracy and other maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea. He said this experience could provide opportunities for professional exchanges and shared learning between the two countries’ naval forces.

The Chief of Naval Staff also called for stronger cooperation among regional navies to tackle maritime threats that cross national borders.

He pointed to Nigeria’s participation in multinational maritime security initiatives, including the Combined Maritime Task Force, as a possible framework for supporting efforts to address maritime security challenges around the Myanmar-Bangladesh maritime border.

Nigeria also expressed interest in Bangladesh’s garment manufacturing sector, particularly its expertise in producing military uniforms, as an area where knowledge could be exchanged to support local production.

The meeting highlighted the importance of continued engagement between Nigeria and other countries to strengthen maritime security, improve professional and technical capacity, develop indigenous defence industries and promote mutually beneficial bilateral relations.
