The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it does not need a coalition with other opposition parties to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, speaking on Arise TV, said the party was confident it had built enough support among Nigerians to win the election on its own. He said ongoing discussions with other opposition parties were mainly focused on cooperation in areas such as election monitoring and protecting votes.
Abdullahi described the 2027 election as a referendum on the performance of the Tinubu administration and expressed confidence in the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Meanwhile, the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement has rejected proposals to merge with another political organisation. The movement, which supports the joint political efforts of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, resolved to remain an independent organisation.
At a national leadership summit in Abuja, the group reaffirmed John Ughulu as its founder and Director-General and rejected proposals for his replacement.
The movement said its grassroots structure had been built around Ughulu's leadership and warned that removing him could cause many of its state, local government and ward-level organisers to withdraw.
The OK Movement also rejected any merger with an external political body, saying such a move could disrupt its existing programmes and weaken its identity and grassroots momentum.
However, the group said its decision to remain independent did not mean it would refuse to cooperate with allied political groups with similar objectives.
The movement also invited Jacky Wayas to return as Director for Strategic Implementation and Planning. Following the resignation of Ambassador Muhammad Auwal Musa, Prince Suleiman Abubakar was appointed Deputy Director-General (North).
The OK Movement later met with Rabiu Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima, who, according to the communiqué, encouraged the group to preserve its unity and independence.
The political developments highlight growing efforts by opposition groups to position themselves ahead of Nigeria's 2027 presidential election.
