Christian women have been urged to demonstrate godly character, strength, dignity and integrity in their homes, churches and communities.
The President of the Women and Girls’ Organisation, Diocese of Lagos West, Anglican Communion, Dr Lydia Odedeji, made the call while delivering her presidential address at the organisation’s 27th Annual Women’s Conference.
The three-day conference, themed “Dressed for Honour,” was based on Proverbs 31:25, which says: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
Odedeji explained that being “dressed for honour” was not limited to physical appearance, stressing that God was more concerned about the spiritual and moral qualities of women.
She identified humility, kindness, compassion, patience, wisdom and faith as virtues that reflect Christian character and urged women to cultivate them.
She also encouraged women to become builders of their families and communities by using their words wisely, supporting others and promoting peace.
According to her, women have an important role in shaping future generations through their conduct, values and personal examples.
Odedeji urged women to remain strong and hopeful despite life’s challenges and to recognise their worth and identity in Christ rather than allowing societal expectations to determine their value.
She further called on women to replace bitterness, pride, fear and discouragement with forgiveness, humility, faith and hope.
The Bishop’s wife also urged women to embrace their responsibilities as mothers, wives, mentors, leaders and role models, saying their lives should reflect God’s presence and bring honour to God.
On state policing, Odedeji called for adequate constitutional safeguards to prevent possible abuse if the system is introduced.
She also encouraged Nigerians, especially women, to participate actively and peacefully in forthcoming elections. She urged them to reject electoral violence, vote-buying, hate speech and misinformation.
Earlier, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West and Patron of the Women and Girls’ Organisation, Rt Rev Dr James Odedeji, cautioned Christians against worldliness and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their faith.
More than 1,000 delegates from across the diocese attended the conference, which featured health talks, Bible study sessions, discussions on contemporary issues and stage presentations.
