Senator Mohammed Ndume, who represents Borno South, has called on the Nigerian military to step up efforts to rescue schoolchildren and travellers abducted from communities in southern Borno State.
Ndume made the appeal during a visit to the headquarters of the North-East Theatre Command, Operation Hadin Kai, in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
He said some of the victims had been in captivity for more than 100 days, causing serious anxiety among their families and communities.
The senator specifically mentioned schoolchildren abducted from Mussa and Lassa, passengers kidnapped along the Buratai axis, and remaining victims from Ngoshe in Gwoza Local Government Area.
While commending the military for its efforts against insurgency, Ndume said more needed to be done to secure the release of the abducted victims.
He said his appeal should not be seen as criticism of the military but as his responsibility as a representative of the people to continue raising the concerns of his constituents.
The Theatre Commander, Major General Abubakar Abdulsalam, thanked Ndume for the visit and assured him that the concerns had been noted. He reaffirmed the commitment of the military and other security agencies to ongoing operations aimed at protecting communities and rescuing displaced residents.
According to the report, 42 pupils were abducted from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School on May 15 following an attack by suspected insurgents.
On June 29, suspected insurgents attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area, and abducted 36 students and one teacher.
The two incidents brought the reported number of abducted students to 78.
