Experts have called for reforms, increased investment, innovation and stronger cooperation among stakeholders to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s poultry industry.
Speaking at a Poultry Association of Nigeria summit in Lagos, Prof. Olutayo Adeyemi described poultry farming as one of Nigeria’s key agricultural sectors and urged researchers, farmers, regulators, investors and government agencies to work together to expand the industry.
He identified feed production, poultry genetics and breeding, broiler production, processing, cold-chain logistics, standard abattoirs and value addition as areas requiring greater investment.
Dr. Mobolaji Alabi said agriculture contributed 23.1 per cent to Nigeria’s GDP in the first quarter of 2026, but noted that the country’s estimated 300 million poultry birds may not be enough to meet future demand.
He also urged farmers to adopt better management practices, including accurate monitoring of feed, medication and bird weight, to increase productivity and reduce antimicrobial resistance.
