Navy vows stronger action against piracy and oil theft in Cross River.

The Nigerian Navy has pledged to intensify operations against piracy, sea robbery, crude oil theft, illegal oil bunkering, smuggling and other maritime crimes in Cross River State.

The Eastern Naval Command’s Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral Chiedozie Okehie, made the statement during the closing ceremony of the Navy’s three-day Intra-Command Maritime Tactical Live Firing Exercise, known as Exercise Littoral Fury, held in Cross River.

He said the exercise was designed to prepare naval personnel for realistic maritime security situations and improve their ability to respond quickly and effectively to threats.

The Navy also stressed the importance of technology, intelligence gathering, specialised training and cooperation among security agencies in tackling maritime crimes.

Representing the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Rear Admiral Suleiman Ibrahim said the exercise demonstrated the Navy’s operational readiness, tactical skills and discipline. He added that it tested gunboats, air assets and other operational units while improving coordination between security services.

Ibrahim noted that Dayspring Island, where the exercise was held, was previously known as a major militant camp but is now occupied by the Navy. He said the increased naval presence would improve security, encourage commercial activities around the Calabar and Dayspring waterways, and strengthen economic activity towards Cameroon.

The Navy said the training also improved personnel’s weapon proficiency, physical endurance and ability to operate effectively in both land and maritime environments.
