A new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll has found that many Americans believe President Donald Trump has gone too far with his immigration policies, particularly on deportations and restrictions on legal immigration.
The survey, released on August 2, shows that 39% of U.S. adults approve of Trump's handling of immigration, down from 49% at the beginning of his second term. Despite the decline, immigration remains one of Trump's strongest policy areas compared with the economy and foreign affairs.
According to the poll, about half of Americans believe the administration has gone too far in deporting undocumented immigrants and tightening legal immigration rules. Many respondents also expressed concern over the use of traffic stops and federal immigration agents in cities to arrest undocumented migrants.
Support among Republicans remains high, with roughly 80% approving of Trump's immigration policies, although that figure has dropped slightly from earlier in his term.
The poll also found weaker public support for Trump's handling of the economy, with only 32% of Americans approving of his economic performance. Around 70% of respondents described the U.S. economy as being in poor condition.
Healthcare also remains a weak point for the administration. Only about 30% of Americans approve of Trump's handling of healthcare, though Republican support for his approach has increased.
The findings come as political parties prepare for the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, where immigration, healthcare, and the cost of living are expected to be key campaign issues.
