Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for leniency toward students who protested against his government over the national examination paper leak scandal, saying that punishing them would not help resolve the crisis.
Speaking in a video message released on Friday, Modi described the protesters as "misled children" and said they should be guided rather than prosecuted.
> "Punishing them, making them appear in court repeatedly, or isolating them from society will not change the situation. I want to forgive them," Modi said.
The protests erupted after leaked question papers forced authorities to conduct a fresh National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for nearly 2 million students, sparking nationwide anger over examination integrity and youth unemployment.
The demonstrations intensified across several cities, including New Delhi, where clashes broke out between protesters and security forces. Hundreds of students were reportedly arrested during the unrest.
The protests ended after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned and the government accepted key demands from protest leaders, including reforms to the examination system and the withdrawal of police cases against demonstrators.
The Indian government has also introduced a bill in parliament proposing tougher penalties, including longer prison sentences and heavier fines, for individuals involved in leaking public examination papers.
