Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is set to introduce a new messaging charge for businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform in Nigeria.
Beginning October 1, 2026, businesses using the platform will reportedly pay approximately ₦14 for each message sent to Nigerian phone numbers.
However, the new charge will not affect ordinary WhatsApp users. Individuals will continue to use WhatsApp to send messages without paying a fee per message.
The businesses expected to be affected include banks, fintech companies, telecommunications firms, retailers and e-commerce platforms that rely on WhatsApp to communicate with customers.
These businesses commonly use WhatsApp to provide customer support, send transaction notifications, confirm orders and promote their products and services.
The development is expected to increase the communication costs of companies that depend heavily on WhatsApp Business for customer engagement and marketing.
